Steps to Organize Your Life!

Determining how to organize your life is a very personal issue: it depends on your circumstances, what you would like to achieve, your personality, and your natural tendencies.

Before you create your personal organization system, you need to know which aspects of your life require more organization and what you would like to achieve.

Step 1 - Self Evaluation

Before deciding how to organize your life, you must evaluate your current circumstances. Take into consideration the following aspects:

  • Work and Career
  • Home
  • Family and Relationships
  • Self-care

Work and Career:

Most of us spend a large proportion of our waking hours at work.

Ideally, our jobs should provide us with the financial income we need to sustain our lifestyle and give us the satisfaction of making a positive contribution to our society.

We should be able to go through our working day with energy, and enthusiasm, and be capable of completing our tasks within normal working hours. For some of us, this may not be the case!

We may often find our jobs stressful and overwhelming. It may be difficult to organize our workload so that we can go home at a reasonable time.

If this applies to you, you should consider getting better organized in the work area.

Your Household

Home is where the heart is. It is our sanctuary, a place where we feel our deepest affection and a place where we should feel happy to come back to!

Do you feel this way about your home?
Does your living environment fill you with pride or do you find it disorganized and cluttered?
Do you cope well with your household tasks, or do they tend to accumulate and get out of hand?

If you don't have a positive response to the above questions, you should consider investing time to organize your home and domestic tasks.

Family and Relationships

Family and friends are the pillars of our lives: they stand by us and give us comfort and support during happy times and times of need. We are often so tied up with our busy lifestyles that we forget how important our relationships with family.

Do you spend sufficient time with your family and friends?

If you don’t you should consider making a special effort to nurture your friendships and relationships so that you don’t have regrets later on!

Self-Care

When we get caught up in our busy lifestyles we tend to forget about self-care. We prioritize the things we consider more important such as our jobs, commitments, and taking care of our family...STOP!!!

This can only work for a short time, but over the long term, this can have very negative effects on our lives.

It's impossible to concentrate and work effectively if you haven't had sufficient sleep. How can you look after your family properly if you are tired, stressed, and prone to illness?

When deciding how to organize your life, consider whether you need to invest more time in self-care.

Decide where to focus your organizational efforts

In which area of your life do you struggle most to stay organized? At work, at home, finding time to spend with your family, or organizing time for self-care?

After analyzing the different areas of your life, you should have a clear idea of which area you have the most difficulty. Focus on getting organized in that area first, once you’ve done that you can move on to organizing other areas.

Step 2 - Prepare Your Action Plan

Once you've identified where you need to focus your organizational efforts, the next step is to prepare your action plan to define how to organize your life. Grab a pen and paper and make a note of the things you need to do to get better organized in the area of your choice.

Action plan ideas

Here are some examples of what you can include in your action plan for each of the different areas:

Getting Organized at Work

  • Declutter and organize your physical space.
  • Organize your digital space.
  • Plan and prioritize your workload.

Organize your household

  • Declutter and organize room areas.
  • Create daily, weekly, and monthly routines for household tasks.
  • Plan meals weekly and batch cook.
  • Use a family calendar to keep track of family events and commitments.

Spending more time with family and friends

Think of ways you can spend quality time with family and friends and organize time to do so:

  • Keep in touch: Think of the family members and old friends that you haven't contacted in a while. Make a conscious effort to give them a call from time to time. It doesn't have to be a long call, just enough to catch up and let them know that you haven't forgotten them.
  • Aim to have at least one meal a day as a family.
  • Arrange to have regular date nights with your partner.

Organizing time for self-care

If you tend to neglect self-care, consider the following tips when deciding how to organize your life:

  • Adopt healthy eating habits: include healthy foods on your shopping list, plan meals, and batch-cook meals in advance to save time.
  • Take regular exercise: Aim to do at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week and muscle-strengthening exercises 2 days per week.
  • Get sufficient sleep: Leave sufficient time at the end of the day to unwind, relax, and have a good night's sleep.

Create your action plan

Once you have decided what you need to do to get organized in the area of your choice, note the action steps you need to take to achieve your objectives. Some of these action these steps may be one-off activities (such as decluttering and organizing your physical or digital space). These should be included on your To-Do list.

Other action steps may include activities that should be carried out regularly as part of your daily and weekly routine.

Include the one-off and routine activities in your action plan.

Step 3 – Execute Your Plan and Stick to It

Now that you've identified the area you wish to improve and created your action plan, it's time to execute it.

Keep your action plan on hand so you can consult it easily when necessary.

Stick to your action plan as closely as possible for at least 30 days to create routine habits that will keep you organized long-term.
